    1 and 1 Mail hosting

This is my third post in as many days.

Based on the recommendations of this forum I have moved my Hosting away from Fasthosts and am trialing 1 and 1.
Overall they seem to be quite efficiant. completing the DNS redirects in approximantly 1 hour. I moved 3 domains and I have set-up three email account (1. an account in my name, 2. Sales. 3. Info) all seem to be completed succesfully. The telephone and email support seem to also be quite speedy, just a shame its an Indian call centre.

I need the Input of the members to solve what I hope will be a seamingly simple problem.

Whilst Configuring my network settings, the documentation on this forum has specified that the SMTP setting should be configured in the following way.

    SMTP server: auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk or auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk
Username and password Required Tick Box - Unticked
    Username - Blank
    Password - Blank

Ive tested this and it fails with errror message
"The SMTP Server Address is Incorrect or not a valid SMTP Server".

What I can't work out is' if I have no associated username and password configured, how does Does Actinic or 1 and 1 know what email address I wish to use in my configuration?

    Any clues anyone

    thank again

    JB

    Use this one:

    auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk

(in the experience of the community 'auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk' has never worked and is not recommended)

Remember to do a refresh before testing.

If that doesn't work, try the advice in this post:

I didn't pick up on that bit of the question.

As Jo says, Actinic uses the email address setup in your business settings, so make sure it's one using your webistes domain or it'll probably get rejected.

In terms of the username and password it's not needed. Actinic sends the emails from the webserver which is a known and trusted location. The SMTP server knows this so doesn't need to ask for this information each time you send. Apart from anything else this makes for a fast and efficient mail server as it doesn't have to check usernames and passwords for every email being sent.

Thanks for the Input and explanation about the account handling.

I'm a lot further than i was, the ftp and smtp settings are all ok now. When I re-run the test I get a new error message.

          Secure Channel Support

The test script failed to execute on the web server. The error could be caused by several things. Check:
          - the 'Path to the Perl shell'
          - the 'CGI script extension'
          - the 'Path to CGI-BIN'
          - the 'CGI-BIN URL'
          - the amount of web space left on your server
          - if your server is configured to accept POSTs to CGI scripts
          - the permissions on the server:
On Linux/Unix based servers the permissions should be:
          cgi-bin (755)– drwxr-xr-x
          Online Store Folder (777)– drwxrwxrwx
On Windows based servers (need to be checked with the hosting company):
          IIS
          cgi-bin = read/execute
          Online Store Folder = read/write/execute
          NTFS
cgi-bin = Catalog's FTP account needs 'Change' permissions on the directory
Online Store Folder = Catalog's FTP account needs 'Change' permissions on the directory AND the IUSR_<servername> account needs to have 'Change' permissions on the directory

I have configured SSL within Actinic.
Now i've checked the Actalog permissions (777) abd Cgi-bin (755)

          Any clues anyone.

Good call, remoed SSL from business settings and retried. This time test was succesful.. I'm guessingthis is now an issue with 1and1's SSL config?

When you have SSL turned on, are you applying it to the whole site, or just checkout? If the former, try the latter.

SSL is set to Checkout pages and customer login only. I'm not applying it to the entire site.

Could you re-enable SSL, then export your network settings ("export" in the network dialog box, save file as something like test.txt, then open this file, remove any user names and passwords, and copy the settings into your reply) so that we can have a look? We are running 1&1 SSL with no problem.

Just leave it off, there are multi million pound actinic sites without this, why do you need it. SSL is more trouble than it's worth IMO.

Whats the alternative, it was my understanding that SSL was need to secure customers credit card details as they are transferred from the site to the Payment gateway. In my case paypal.

As this is my first E-Commerce site, I'm trying to minimise the risk to me

You're almost certainly not PCI compliant if doing that anyway, so probably needs changing. Have a look at actinic payments, probably one of the best choices now, particularly for new companies looking to move onto a dedicated PSP.

Have you actually got an ssl cert installed, when i type https://www.truesurvival.co.uk into a browser i get the following error message

                              Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to www.truesurvival.co.uk.

SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

                              (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)

                              * The page you are trying to view can not be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

                              * Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site.

I suspect the SSL is wrong, not Actinic network settings.

Ypu will need ssl if you are using paypalpro, otherwise its up to you whether you feel it will increase conversions
