Error returned from SMTP server (4: <>: missing or malformed local part )

Customers get this error message when sending the Contact Us form.
I've looked at past threads but can't see this problem mentioned. I'm not sure but it looks like <> indicates a blank email address is the problem but I can't see why. The company contact email is correct, I've retyped to eliminate errors, I've tested with different customer emails, but the error is constant.

I am not sure if this may be related to another email issue - no customer receipt email. I have Actinic support looking at the receipt email issue, but it's taking forever and I thought I'd see if the ever helpful community has any ideas about the Contact Us error?

    here's hoping!

A screenshot of your Business Settings showing what you've got in the email field may help.

UPDATE: Are you sure you have a valid email address set? Your servers error log is full of:
    Code:
Program = ORDERSCR, Program version = 22690 , HTTP Server = Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) mod_ssl/2, Return code = 999 , Date and Time = 2009/11/09 17:34, Internal Errors = Email receipt not sent to customer. Undefined store email address.

More than likely yes it is related.

in addition to seeing business settings, what are your network settings and who is the host and who is your isp?

I have seen this error message appear before and in that case it was apparently related to a variable missing in the database.

If you do have an email address entered then check with Actinic support. There could be a bug that is causing this.

Thanks for this advice. The network settings are attached FYI.

I can't see any problems, but being too close I can miss the obvious I guess. The host is Hazelnet, isp is BT.

Keep the suggestions coming, I'm grateful.

            I can't see them.

Usually the best way to do this is to export the network settings to a file and then copy and paste them into the forum.

Double check what's in Settings / Business Settings / Company/Contact / Contact / Email Address. It should be a plain address like me@mysite.com with no brackets or special characters of any kind.

Thanks Norman, Quadruple checked, but have a look yourself...

                  jderry@sandedge.com

Copied direct from the email field, can't see any typos, brackets, or spaces. That's the email address that works when tested and seems fine for incoming emails.

Everything looks fine in youe email field and network settings, so it looks very much like it's not you but Actinic as per Mike's #4 post. You may need to send your database to them for fixing.

If you have Access, you can open ActinicCatalog.mdb and look in the Setup table. Email Address should be between Fax Number and Web Site Address and should contain what you entered via Business Settings.

                        Thanks Norman

I don't have Access, but thanks for the suggestion. I guess I'll have to wait for Actinic support to find the bug and suggest a solution.

I'll post the final chapter whenever that happens.

Give them a big prod and mention the missing variable problem that's already been found by them as a problem here http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=43895

They should be able to find out who solved the problem, what they did and whether there's the same problem here.
