    Working remotely...

    Hello,
I have a scenario which is anyone can give their 2 penny worth I would be grateful. We currently have several sites running off a server with 4 different users – predominantly 3 users are order processors and I carry out any work within the sites (V9 Business Plus User).

I am going on maternity leave in the next couple of weeks and so will not be around the office to be doing the relevant alterations; I plan on working from home over the next few months. For the basics, ie price changes etc, then one of the other users can do this or alternatively I can login remotely to do small jobs. The problem I’m up against is rural broadband! In the main office where the server etc is located we can typically get speeds of half a meg and this will be the same for me working from home. This makes prolonged remote access a nightmare to work with. I have chatted with our IT guys and the other options they mentioned were not feasible due to the broadband strength (or lack of!).

This has left me a little stumped – the only way I can think to work on more significant changes, is to take a snapshot of a site, make the relevant changes I need over a period of time at home (ie new sections, updated images and homepages etc) and then bring it back to the office and import the alterations onto the main site (if I remember rightly it ‘s possible to import but not override the orders etc that will have come in, in the meantime?). It’s not ideal and is going to be time consuming, however I guess a lot of designers must work in a similar way and then send the alterations to their client to “sync” the version of the sites. Can anyone see a better way, or a problem with working in this way? Am I right in thinking you cannot edit a specific area of a site and then simply import the updated content?

    Any suggestions welcome, thanks

    Lucy

The answer is simple, you're going on maternity leave, 'leave' being the operative word. Take some time off and rest, if you are going to be working from home it's pointless, you'd be better going into work part time instead so you worked on those days and completely switched off on others.

Better still, give up control of that part and teach a member of staff how to do it, accept they will balls up a few times, but you can always be on the phone and ultimately you will have better cover and a much better break.

Heaven forbid you were involved in a serious accident or alike, but if you were, business would not fall off a cliff, some times i think you just have to relax, take some time off and let things be.

Without decent broadband, you are stuffed for remote work, you are right in that they can import a snapshot and 'exclude orders' so you can work in the way you mention.

I find logmein works reasonably over a not too fast link. Working remotely from my iPhone to one of my development machines is acceptable over a poor 3G connection.

Might be worth you trying Logmein.

Thanks, for your reply... I see where you’re coming from and I will be on leave for a long time, but there will be situations whereby I have to get involved (and will probably want to!) I guess it’ll have to be lots of snapshots!

Hi Duncan, we do use LogmeIn at the mo and find it good but it's a bit tedious for anything over 20 mins of work!
