There are many variations of server provided by 1&1 so your mileage may vary.
Of course there's nothing to stop you using a valid username / password.
By valid username/password I assum you mean v7 and not v6 which is what we are currently on.
We I evaled v7 a valid username/password would not work either.
On v6 I have also on tried the auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk mail server but that did not work either.

Ooops. Yes, you can't have Authenticated SMTP on V6. That's a V7 addition.
However I'm quite happily using V6 and plain SMTP on 1&1 (Linux / Business) via auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk.
There are lots of 1&1 hosting packages so success may vary by package.

Actually I just gave it another go on v6 and it appears to now be working, using the auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk e-mail address, which, thankfully is very good news.

Great. Were you using auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk before?
It's a valid server but I've seen different behaviour when people try to use that.
