I use Advanced Log Analyser and Sawmil, but I found this site on AWstats which might help you http://minitutorials.com/apache/stats12.shtml

Sorry, I can't help directly on this. I download my log files to my PC and analyse them there using Mach5's stats analyzer program.

For immediate, how's it doing today, type stats I use statcounter.

Not sure that you would be able to install AWSTATS yourself as probably requires server permission you don't have access to.

The Sawmill analyser Bill mentions goes one step further than AWSTATS (I use both) and is well worth checking out - they have a trial download available

I have a managed server with 1&1 which provides MySQL.

If I remember correctly the terms of use for using the MySQL database (which Awstats requires) is that you do not use them to capture and analyse usage statistics.

Do they sell their stats package as an optional upgrade then? .. would explain the exclusions on the SQL server

No - their stats package comes as part of the package - I just think that they are concerned with their SQL servers being bashed. The SQL databases are hosted on a different server to your own managed server.

Regarding AwStats I am aware that Claranet have just introduced this as their standard statistics pacakage included in all offerings. Lets hope others folow suit.

Yep - on CLARA and was upgraded a couple of weeks back ... although it does hammer the site space allowance (similar thread open at the moment) due to the size of the log files they are currently churning out

Thanks a lot guys. Looks like I'll have to try another route, maybe even a different host!

I cannot think of any stat you would want that is not available in the raw logs from 1 and 1. You should take a look at Sawmill.
