processing a refund

I have tried to follow the knowledge bases instructions for processing a refund, but it does not work.
If you enter a figure (like they suggest) -£8.00 it tells you it is an invalid price and to enter a figure between 0 and 21,000000.

so i searched this forum for similar posts and found this thread.

However, even following this advice i still can't get it to work. Once i have processed it, it tells me this order is now pending.

I am tired, so its probably me, can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong?

When you enter a payment record, you aways enter a postiive amount, however in the payment type drop down, there are some entries for credits and some entries for debits, so to give a refund of £6 you enter a credit of £6.
