    Google Problem

Our site has been up and running for a couple of months now and at first we weren't doing too badly in google.

After reading one of the threads on here I typed in site:kulfikids.co.uk yesterday to see how many links there were in google compared to some of our other sites.

It only shows two pages and I can't work out why

Does anyone have any ideas please ?

Also what's the general opinion on dmoz and how long does it actually take to appear on it?
    Thanks
    Andy

Sounds like you are in the "Sand Box" do a search on the forum or google to find out all about it.

As for DMOZ it could take many months if not years. It all depends on wheather or not the category you have submitted to has an editor and how active they are. Its no use resubmitting, it may be easier to find a category that has an editor and submit there - you can teel if there is an editor by looking at the bottom of the page and if it says "become an editor for this section" then you are in for a long wait. You can also see the date the page was last updated which will give you an idea how active the editor is.

Sorry, but that last post is totally misleading.

Whether or not there is a listed editor has nothing to do with anything, and there is absolutely no advantage to submitting a site to the wrong category, and several disadvantages.

The quickest way to get a listing is to read the information on the submission pages and then follow that to the letter.

If you have a physical place of business where people are employed, stock is warehoused, products are made, and that information is prominently displayed on your website, then you can submit your site to the DMOZ category for that location IN ADDITION to the topical listing in the Shopping section - this applies worldwide.

The UK is treated differently by DMOZ due to an experiment that took place when they were considering splitting the Directory by region. Note that the correct locations for both listings for a company from the UK are under Regional/UK - i.e. Regional/UK/Shopping in the single best fit subcategory, and Regional/UK/Country/Physical Location of your company, and that UK shops can also qualify for a third listing under the main Shopping topic - should be same topic as the UK listing.

Use your Company Name as the title and describe in two short sentences why you are unique at what you do and what facilities are available on the website - avoid emotional qualifications, like best, cheapest, quickest etc and stay objective in the description and you should have at least one listing fairly quickly.

I agree with all of the above and was suggesting as said that you look to place you listing in other categories that may be suitable.

DMOZ is edited by humans and if there is no editor for a particular category you will not be listed. Look at some of the last updated dates and you will see that some have not been added to for many many months. While others are very active, I spend alot of time getting my clients into the directory as I feel it is a very important one (some would say not so these days) and it can be very frustrating if there is no active editor.

A word of warning do not submit to a wrong category just to get listed as it will be VERY difficult to change later. You need to be where your competitors are for your results to show in other directorys/listings next to them.

As an example I have been trying to get a site listed in the category
          HTML Code:
          http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Cumbria/Grasmere/Travel_and_Tourism/Accommodation/Self_Catering/
since June 05. If you look at the page it was last updated in July 05.

One way to get in is to become an editor for your category if there is not one already

Of course I am only speaking of my experiences with DMOZ I am sure everyone will have a different experience.

            More misunderstandings

if there is no editor for a particular category you will not be listed
WRONG! Editall/Cateditall/Meta can edit ANY category. Many editors choose not to be listed on categories they edit.
do not submit to a wrong category just to get listed as it will be VERY difficult to change later
WRONG! If you submit to the wrong category, when the category you submitted to is edited, and the incorrect submission found, it will be forwarded to the editor's choice of more appropriate category and will wait there for an editor to review.

http://resource-zone.com/forum/faq.p...site_questions - the most factual information available outside DMOZ - after all it is written by editors.

The Sandbox has nothing to do with how many pages in a site are indexed. You can still be in the sandbox and have all your site indexed. The Sandbox is an Age Effect (plus other things ).
How many pages you have indexed depends on how well your site is crawled by googlebot and how many pages are indexed. Google is particularly bad at indexing actinic sites..I think this is something to do with the cgi-bin issue

This was the original question that was posted and I have replied based on my experience of submitting 137 sites to the directory.

The fastest I have had a site listed is 13 days the slowest is over 8 months. The amendments I have done have taken between 2 weeks and 3 months.

I know what it says in the DMOZ link, but this is my experience/opinion which is what was asked.

Perhaps others would like to state their times for inclusion so that people can get a better idea than my obviously incorrect opinion.

The time between submission and an editorial review ranges anywhere from two minutes to over two years. This is due to the voluntary nature of the ODP - editors volunteer their time free of charge to do what they can to build the directory. Reviewing submitted sites is only one of many tasks which editors need to perform, and for many editors, not the top priority.
As quoted by DMOZ - refect my experience of the process!

Rubbish - I have found that Google can index an Actinic site as well as a site designed in Dreamweaver and am currently converting sites designed with a Dreamweaver front end to Actinic.

The post I made here still holds truehttp://community.actinic.com/showthr...amweaver+index but I have found that the advantages of Actinic over ride the benifits of using DW.

The answer to any cgi issue is not to use it.

With all respect you have no clew what you are talking about. The proof is that your site ruralwebdesign, which has been up for over 2 years is no where to be found in google for the serach terms "web design" or "e-commerce". So I suggest you first sort out your site before trying to sort out someone else's site. Sorry, you are clewless ...

If you look closely you will see that 2 weeks ago I completely removed my Dreamweaver built site and replaced it with a new Actinic site. Obviously this has totally trashed my rankings which I expected.

The two key words/phrases you mention are very competitive and I dont even bother to target them. My key phrase is "Cumbrian website designers" from which I get most of my business ie I target my local market, im not interested in building sites for people outside my local area.

For my keyphrase on my new Actinic based site I am now back up to No 6 it was 13 last week which is better than I expected so soon after such a major rebuild. Again it shows how impressive Actinic is.

Anyway Doc we are still waiting to see how good your site is - I think its not doing too well juding by your other posts.

sounds like total nonsense to me. If you knew what you were doing, chaning one platform to another should not make a radical change in your ratings. If you are really able to optimise your website for google as you claim to do, then you would be able to compete on the more cometitive terms. If not, then I cant see how you are doing yourself or your customers a favour. Are you saying all your customers only operate sites within cumbria. If you cant optimise your site for the wider market, you will find it very difficult to optimise your customers sites for the wider market.

I optomise my site for the keywords I select which is what I am saying. I do not wish to spend my time competing for a keyword that gets me a prospective client in Australia!. I only want clients in Cumbria so I only want to rank for that term which I can do with little effort. SEO is all about identifying a market, tuning your website to that market and not spending time and effort chasing keywords that are almost impossible to rank for.

My clients sites rank for the keyterms they select as I have demonstrated to you on other posts.

I am quite happy to demonstrate my ranking for keywords etc as I believe that is the true test of a contributor to this discussion

                              Ref: Post #9

I appreciate that it can take considerable time to get listed on DMOZ, in fact if you read further, you will also see that no site is guaranteed a listing, so the real time from submission is actually 2 days to infinity.

The two minutes is not possible - recent posts have stated there is an anti-spam process on the submission server which takes a minimum of one day to pre-process a submission.

My objection is to the garbage about looking to see if there is an editor, and about submitting to a category that is not the best fit, just because you find an editors name on the page (and depending whereyou are looking the page can be six months or so out of date).

Submit to the regional location where you have a physical presence, that is confirmed on the website. Submit to the single best fit category under Shopping (Regional/Shopping for UK sites) then move on to something else.
