    1and1 and windows server

Is anyone running Actinic on the 1and1 Windows server?

I have been asked to upload a shop alongside the official site, however I am having a great deal of difficulty getting th windows server to play ball.

The 1and1 help desk cannot not help as they do not encourage you to change permissions on a windows server.

For info the server is a windows 2003 server and cgi scripting has been enabled.

I welcome any comments or queries,

    Thanks,
    Sally Dickson

Have a look in the V8 problem solvers thread and see if that helps, if not try the search facility as it has been covered a number of times.

      Hi Lee,

This is not particularly helpful. The article on the 1and1 server covers something completely different to what I was talking about.

The Smiley Shop has been live for over two months, and is linked into the official Smiley website http://www.smileyworld.com . (Obviously its not live right now.)

The Smiley team decided to change servers and due to the high quantity of asp content on the main site chose a Windows server solution from 1and1.

Now as it happens I host 5 other shops on a 1and1 Linux Premium Package with excellent support, etc.

When I spoke to them about this new site on the Windows server, they pretty much washed their hands of it saying they did not advise where people how to change permissions.

My contact who controls the server is having a lot of problems:

      1) He thinks he has replicated 755 CHMOD permissions on the cgi-bin
      2) He thinks he has replicated 777 CHMOD permissions on the acatalog folder
This requires special programming and is difficult to manage as a windows server does not show the CHMOD settings in the same way as aLYNX server.

There is an additional problem I suspect because of the structure of the web site folders:

      home/
      home/cgi-bin
      home/shop/acatalog

normally I manage my sites so the folder structure is

      home/cgi-bin
      home/acatalog

The error messages I am getting at the moment are:

When I test the network settings:

1st. The directory specified as the path from the CGI-BIN to the acatalog directory does not exist on the web server. Check the path. Also see the on-line help for "Path from FTP server to Catalog".

2nd. The script does not have permission to write to the web site directory.

Do you have dreamweaver or can you ftp into the site and check the folder structure and permissions?

Dreamweaver 8 lets you check and change permissions. Its worth going back to the basics and checking these before anything. It is widely acknowledged that actinic can run on windows servers, however it is also widely acknowledged that it is easier to setup and more people have done so, if not on windows.

If your folders are sitting within folders, then make sure the parent folders have the correct permissions. Export your network settings too and post them in here as 99.99% of the time there is an error in those also.

          and now for the plunge...

          Hi Lee,

          Thanks for this.

I hosted the shop on an alternative server over Christmas, but with the New Year I have resolved to try and sort out the problems on the Windows server.

As suggested, I have got hold of a copy of Dreamweaver 8 (trial version).

I have accessed the server and realised that my server side bloke had not set-up the correct file structure. So I have now opened and set-up the following folder structure:

          /
          cgi-bin/
          shop/
          shop/acatalog

          The URL is www.smileyworld.com

So excellent tip to Macromedia Dreamweaver v8.

I have also accessed the server and tried to set permissions. Here I have been less successful.

I have an error message saying: Setting permissions failed, check ftp-log.

I cheked the ftp-log and it says: CWD /acatalog
          < 250 CWD command successful.

I think that means I have changed permissions?

          As suggested:

I attach below the network settings.

if you go back to the file you changed permissions on and opt to set permissions again you will be able to see its current value, this will tell you if you were sucessful

Have you read other threads on permissions on windows servers?

              Hi Jo,

              Thanks for this input.

No unfortunately the Permissions show up as 0 when I do as you suggest.

I have found this thread: http://community.actinic.com/showthr...indows+servers.

I will try these sugestions next.

              Thanks,

Ok I am rapidely getting nowhere on this one.

I spoke to Actinic Support and they say I have to ask 1and1 to change permissions on the server.

I have spoken to 1and1 and they have said they no longer support the changing of permissions on the Business Windows Server, so I have to run a script on the server.

Any clues? Has anyone ever done this?

The problem you have is some hosts do not set their windows servers up to allow you to run actinic so I suspect you are on a hiding to nothing. If you do a thorough search in the community you will find some hosts mentioned where actinic will sit quite happily on a windows server and other hosts where it doesn't.

I have no experience of 1&1 so can't offer any more suggestions
