My God, that sounds like the most complicated image referencing system i've ever heard. KISS.

I don't like to make things easy!! Is there any solution to the images though?
We have to upload from sage as it controls our stock levels automatically.

Surely Sage doesn't have to control your images, what if you had no images for example? Let actinic control your images.

No Sage doesn't control the images, but all our products are uploaded from Sage so the image is transfered at the same time as the product. This image size is 500 x 500 and then actinic changes the image to the correct size for our web pages.

If we had no image in our sage web section and uploaded the product then actinic will just add the imgae from the product above automatically. I can change the images in Actinic, but when we are uploading lots of new products it is faster to do it from Sage.

We are happy with the way the products are uploaded, but don't like the quality of the images when changed in Actinic, thought there might have been a better way of doing this

          Web' fields
Version 7 (or higher) of Sage Line 50 includes a 'Web' tab for each product where you
can enter data that will only be used in your online store. This includes a 'Description'
field for the product name, a 'Details' field for a longer description, and also an
'Image' field. If you are using these web fields, ensure the 'Publish to Web' checkbox
is ticked in order for the product to be transferred to Actinic.
Actinic Link can use the 'Custom Fields' in the 'Web' tab to create a hierarchy of
sections in the online store. The three 'Category' fields (A, B and C) are used to
generate a section tree in Actinic up to three sections in depth. Enter the name of a
top-level section in the 'Category A' field. You can then optionally enter the name of a
subsection within that in the 'Category B' field, and then a further sub-section layer
          within the 'Category C' field.

This is the link for actinic link to sage from actinic website:
