Secure payment with insurance against fraud

    Hiya,

We have recently gone from using Actinic SSL to using Protx as our payment gateway because we wanted our processing to be done automatic and not get through orders that will fail.

However what we have now noticed is that before when we did the transactions we would note names, addy's that we thought were suspect and hold back orders/transactions until we could get some verification from customer. ie somebody come to site and order £700 worth of guns and delivery addy would be diff to invoice.

Protx has let some very dubious orders go through this week.

We have the feeling that the credit card details have been stolen from somewhere but the owner is not aware as they still have their card and will not be aware until the next invoice from credit card company.

We feel that Protx offers us nothing new from when we were manually processing our cards, apart from the fact that we were more on the ball when it came to sniffing out suspicious orders.

So the problem we face if we recieve an order through for a £200 gun and the card details go through then at the end of the month the owner of the card finds ppl have been spending on it and they contact the credit card company, we then have the money taken back out of our account.

We would like to know is there any payment gateway out there that insures you for the transactions they put through? So if they put through an order of a card thats stolen we are not the ones left liable ? ..

We thought Protx was going to be a good solution but where as they do the transaction we wouldnt of done these transactions and now think we want to go back to manual processing.

(Just to claify - We never ship items to orders we feel that are fraud, we are not looking to be insured so we can ship all orders, we are looking for a payment system that is on the ball)

    Thanks -

WorldPay pre-authorised transactions might be the way to go - but probably more expensive than Protx.

With pre-authorisation it gives you 5 days to make any checks you need to before actually taking the money from the card - therefore if you find anything suspect you don't need to complete the order and therefore the funds are not taken from the card.

Protx also offers Pre-Authorised and Deffered payment options.

Do you have the full cv2 checks in place with protx so that the user has to have the card present to give the security numbers and only send to card address.

      Never heard of insurance.

Yeah we do have the 3 digits on card collected as standard.

And as for insurance, I mean just a way to protect the trader. We spoke to Protx this morning about other options but wasn't told of anything..

This afternoon I have changed the settings on the website to only ship to invoice address.

Look into the 3D Secure options with Protx. This offers full confirmation of cardholder details and fraud cover.

          Cheers

No card processor is going to insure you against fraudulent orders. So no there is no processor out there who will do what you are asking. The only realistic way forwards is to use pre-authorise/deferred payments so you can make your own checks before accepting the card for processing.

Using an online payment processor has the following advantages

1 they take care or the arduous process on you having to type all your card numbers into your pdq machine. If you do loads of orders daily this is worth it, if you do one or two orders if may not be a critical option for you.

2 they store all the sensitive data you don't have to worry about keeping CC detail on your PCs. There are some regulations recently introduced about keeping CC details on PCs

Online processors do not make rigorous CC checks on your behalf, they do rudimentary checks for addresses and check against known stolen cards. They will quite happily let a card through that has been used to make a fraudulent order and they will still make a chargeback to you.

The only way to completely avoid fraudulent orders is to close your online shop. If this is not an option (and I don't expect it will be) you just have to exercise caution and develop a gut instinct - which is what you do already..

You will find loads of threads in this forum moaning about the fact that banks don't care, the police don't care and yes the person where the buck stops is you.....
