Had a good chat with Nadeem who fully understands the problem(s) that I/we have at the moment. Hopefully the snapshot will at least give us a comparison to Clara's `response times` if you know what I mean.

I also now have a `ticket number` from Clara (at last!!) who are passing this issue on to their support team, for investigation, so fingers crossed here too.

Has anybody got a decent speed Smart themed website on Clara?

Are you on a shared web area or your own server? I am with Netsaclibur, who are now owned by Clara, and we have our own Cobalt RaQ550 server. Since Clara took over the word 'Service' has gone from 'Internet Service Provider'.

I have a site under development using this 'Smart' theme that will replace an existing site later this week - maybe. It is not a big shop site, but take a look anyway. It is mostly text but is slower than the v6.1.4 site.

      www.volvoclub.org.uk/test/index.html

I also have noticed that when I click on any of the links in the Store Sections box I get the warning "This page contains secure and nonsecure items". I thought this had been sorted out. The entire site is in https, so why is this still happening?

          Hi Niall

To us non techie types, how do you actually cut down on the Javascript?

If you use Norcascade does that do it automatically.

I am afraid this is quite techie at present.

It could be made very simple - but it will take a while for me to achieve this.

Run a page from your site through this http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/

From this you will see what the elements are on your page. You will probably find that javascript takes up at least half. Ger rid of that and you halve your download speed.

Norcascade takes up about 25k. For broadband users thats nothing and you get a great result. If your customers are using a wet string that will take a long time.

As always its a trade off.

Actinic seems to use javascript in a very cavalier fashion. Its almost impossible to get rid of it completely.

              Hi all

I have just change the theme on my site to one of the clean layouts, it is now much quicker.

Using the website analyser my Javascript went from a whopping 288K on the smart theme to just 8K on the clean layout theme.

Although the layout does not look as good, i am sure that it will enable visitors to browse the site much more easily.

              Cheers

                Well done.

The whole point of an internet based application is the concept of thick:thin technology. The work is supposed to be done at the server. A client with 290k Javascript is downright obese. 8k is healthy.

                    Nadeem

I have just timed a few page downloads on George's test site, including the cart facility and it all works very smoothly. I probably waited no more than 5 seconds for any page to download.

However, to add to the confusion, I'm currently hosting a large V6 site with Claranet which is also very very slow, even with broadband. I developed and tested the site on a Fasthosts webserver, the site worked fine there and at a respectable speed. Now that it's live and hosted with Claranet it's terrible. My customer isn't too happy about it either.

Claranet say they were completing upgrades on the 15th and 20th of July, but these seem to have made very little difference to overall performance. I also think that using shared SSL and customer login causes further problems with the scripts.

Hi Bob, can you let us know the url of your latest `slow` site, you can email it to me if you prefer.

Experimenting is ongoing, and progress has been made, I'll keep this updated for everyone that's interested.

I run 2 monitors here, so ran a few speed tests

the site at actinic servers is definately quicker, all the actions that i tried which need srcipts ie search, js menu, and clicking on links in the left and right margins are definately slower on the live site (claranet)

                          George

                          The URL is www.integrityservices.co.uk

You should find that the brochure pages are quite quick, they were this morning, but login and thereafter is poor.

                          Login: testuser
                          PW: maximi

I really think this is a Claranet issue, even though javascript is slowing things down. Take a look at the development site with Fasthosts
                          www.integrity.maxim-i.co.uk
it's much much faster. The Login and PW are the same.

                            I have idsn, a 64kb connection.

Agree with you on the brochure pages, although they are direct links, which makes a huge difference.

It took ages to log-in though, maybe a blank screen for 20 odd seconds. Have clicked on a few products sometimes taking 15 seconds plus to load up.

Looks like Actinic are having problems running the scripts big time. Check the fh site on the Actinic server now, the lh (java) menu has been replaced and the badge links on the rh side altered also...

Have a look at the Football Heaven site now, an updated version is online. I'm sure Nadeem will comment of this when he has a minute.

                              Faster, with real links.

                              What do you think folks?

                                Much, much faster.

The problem is definitely with the perl scripts running slowly on the claranet server.

I'm a real fan of direct links. They're faster and better for the search engines. Just no use if you have customer accounts.
