Perl envirnoment - operation timed out

    Hi,

I keep getting this error in the advanced network setup:

"the wizard received an unexpected exception while testing the web server's perl environment. The operation timed out. Try again later"

I did try again for 2 days straight! the problem does not seem to be corrected and I can not get the network settings right to upload my website. This is my first attempt. I would really appreciate the help.

It would help a lot if you posted:

    Who your hosting is with?

    Whether Windows, Linux, Unix, etc?

Your Network settings? Use Web / Network Setup / Export) - obscure all passwords.

My host is networksolution.com, unix. The following are the network settings. I won't be surprised if they were incomplete as the operation always gets timed out:

Surely the inclusion of htdocs in URLs like this is wrong?

          CATALOGURL http://02a95b3.netsolhost.com/htdocs/acatalog/

            I have changed it to

            http://www.krooty.com/htdocs/acatalog
            http://www.krooty.com/cgi-bin

Now I'm getting the following error

The test script failed to execute on the web server. The error could be caused by several things. Check the path to the Perl shell, the CGI script extension, the path to CGI-BIN, and the CGI-BIN URL. This error could also occur if your web site is out of disk space or your web server is not configured to accept POSTs to CGI scripts.

              htdocs still being used?

              Try:

              http://www.krooty.com/acatalog/

              and

              http://www.krooty.com/cgi-bin/

OK couple of questions, why are you not using your true url, this does not seem to me the one you will use, i maybe wrong

                  but try these settings

                  CATALOGURL http://www.krooty.com/acatalog/
                  CGIBINURL http://www.krooty.com/cgi-bin/
                  PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG ../htdocs/acatalog/
                  CODEBASE ./
                  FTPHOST krooty.com
                  FTPUSERNAME ******
                  FTPPASSWORD ******
                  PATHTOCGIBIN /cgi-bin/
                  USEPASSIVEFTP false
                  FTPPATHFROMCGITOCATALOG /htdocs/acatalog/

                  cant promise

                    Darren, This is my URL

Anyway just tried a crazy thing and it worked!

I decided to skip the test in the network setup and went straight to uploading my website and it uploaded with no errors!

When I test the settings I get the errors. But the upload of the site was completed.

Can't understand why test can not be completed though.

P.S. don't try to view it cause I took it offline.

If the network test has failed then it is likely there is still a problem. Did you try adding to cart and other cgi links?

Ok I tried to upload the site again but I don't see the progress box where everything gets checked with a blue check mark why is that happening? It does not seem to be uploading at all and I still get the errors when I do the test.

i ment the http://02a95b3.netsolhost.com/htdocs/acatalog/ url, this is the surely the holding page on your server until the krooty url has been registered and propergated across, some time actinic will not work on these pages or ip address's either

if you try and navigate to this url then it is invalid, your ftp user name and password give you root access to your domain, the htdocs folder is your webspace in a folder on the root, you should not have this in your url.

best thing to do is create a new ftp account with access only to the htdocs folder on the server and use these details in actinic, then do not reference htdocs in the urls

Darren, I have changed the address to krooty.com/acatalog. The other URL was actually put by me and it was not detected by actinic wizard, it is actually the FTP address and putting it was one of my many attempts to make the settings work. I don't really get you when you said create another FTP account. Did you mean sign up with another web hosting company? I have just paid $160 for this account and would be really frustrated if I get to open another account because actinic can not work with it! my hosting company is networksolutions.com. I would really appreciate it if actinic can contact them and get the answers as I am not able to speak this technical language with them and would not be able to explain it properly.

                            Many thanks

no not another hosting compnay, i do not know the type of hosting package you have, but when you sign up you are given you ftp username and password, this normally gives you full access to your root folder.

with alot of packages you can set up another ftp account through your control panel that only gives access to the folder, your website folder yours i would guess is htdocs. If you are able to do this then you can remove this reference from your setup

i think your best option is to talk to your host, without being rude you need to understand where the files are going and the directory structure on your server, actinic can not upload and test scripts if they are going to the wrong folders on the server
