I have a oneandone Linux account and I use auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk. Out of interest I tried pinging auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk and auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk and they both resolve but to different IP addresses.
Jumped the gun a bit when I said it was working. Turns out that the emails I received were from when I used auth.smtp.onandone.co.uk as the email server name. Unfortunately when I do that I get the following errors when testing network settings:-
Your Catalog URL appears to be invalid. The files uploaded to the given 'Path from cgi-bin to acatalog directory', can not be downloaded via the browser on the given Catalog URL. These two access routes don't point to the same destination on the server.
Now I don't know why changing the email server would cause this but it does. If I change back to auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk the error goes away but is replaced by this:-
The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (SMTP) server. Check the computer name or address and try again. If it fails again, then it is possible, you were locked out by a firewall program, or you don't have network connection to this server.
Unfortunately when I do that I get the following errors when testing network settings:-
I don't think the server name of 'auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk' would make the 'Your Catalog URL appears to be invalid' message 'go away'. I just think Actinic may not get any further than the network settings test so does not report the other error. You should use the SMTP server name of 'auth.smtp.onandone.co.uk'.
Your cgi-bin to acatalog folder path is ../acatalog/. THis means:
1) Your 'acatalog' folder is on the same directory level as the 'cgi-bin'
2) Your 'acatalog' folder is directly visible when your first log into your server via FTP.
Sorry, I may not have made myself clear here; the site is up and running, uploads and downloads work perfectly (except for the occassional program hang by Actinic) so surely the paths etc.are correct. The only problem I have is email. The server auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk works fine with MS Outlook.
But anyway in answer to your last question - both statements are true.
P.S.
Just tried sending emails from Actinic with auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk and it wouldn't send them, giving the following error:-
I'm on the Business Plan (£8.99) but was given auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk as the mail server and, as previously stated, it does work with my email software, just not with Actinic.
Still having the same problems. Spoke to oneandone today who suggested we ask in this forum for correct configuration settings.
So - can anyone who is hosted with 1and1 please reply with their network settings, or advise on how we can get this to work?
Thanks in advance.
Ta Da!
Using auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk I have now correctly configured my network settings. The errors were referring to the ssl server (which is a different sever) and not the main server which is why I couldn't get it to work.
Problem solved!
I had the same problem. Try "localhost" as the entry in the mail server field."
No quotes
I am on a linux solution and used localhost in the SMTP box and it works like a charm. It would be nice if Actinic could add this example to the F1 help for that configuration setting.
The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (SMTP) server. Check the computer name or address and try again.
SMTPHOST auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk
Graeme, try using "localhost" (without the "") as your SMTP server. It works on most [unix] servers although on 1&1 anything can happen. Let's just say that they don't have the best rep in the business but as so often one gets what one pays for.
