Same here bumpsy, there is a mini exchange for virgin on the side of my house, i am literally 1.5 metres from the exchange. BT are a million miles away though, theres a petition website about it, broadband for Polesworth or something similar.

Certainly nowhere near as good as it sounds. Browsing is fast but there's no noticable difference between 10 and 20Mb. FTP is faster but the max I've got is a bit over 12Mb, maybe 15Mb max. Upload is good though at 768kb - the main real reason to have it unless you download tonnes of stuff.

During peak times we all seem to agree that speed capacity is a waste of time - at least on Virgin.

Try it out for month or so - I suppose you can always go back again. Make sure your modem can handle the speed though, I had to change out my old motorola to get more than about 6Mb. I now have the new NTL modem which should give the whole whack if I could get it.

We don't even have any cable locally so I'm kinda stuck with whatever BT can send my way

Im on their 4mb at the moment, upload seems to be about 250 and download about 480, which seems OK (i think). Can you clarify what your FTP figures are for? 12mb what?

They're certainly throttling down at peak times, a marked difference in everything. I understand from what i've read that a new modem is needed too and this may incur an installation charge etc.

One thing i have never been able to get a satisfactory answer on is wireless network capacity. If i upgraded to what you have, can my wireless network cope with that speed? Any ideas?

I would like file downloads to be faster and actinic uploads to be faster. Oh and the forum to bloody work. I reckon the forum is also on version 8.5.1 HFUA.

          Thanks for the info buddy.

            Hi Guys

You could also try this (we are with virgin and get the same issues with sites that we access quite a few.)

Turn off the DNS service in window.

CONTROL PANEL > ADMIN TOOLS > SERVICES > DNS CLIENT | STOP SERVICE

This resolves this for moi most times. (Do not worry, it will switch on again when you restart)

I must read up on DNS a little i feel. Answers like yours although helpful of course, confuse me somewhat. If we can stop the service and all is fine, why on earth is it running in the first place.

CROCCY give us some babble on DNS please.

Just a brief summary in your style of writing which tells me what it does, what it's for and why the service can be stopped and have no effect on anything. I presume it stands for Dedicated Named Servers?

Best I've managed to get so far is a bit more than 12000 kbps (Kilobits/Sec) downloads. (about 1450 kB/s - Kilobytes/Sec)

It may do depends what modem you have - The NTL 250 I think it's called or later will work fine IIRC - best check with them.

Mine handles it fine - I run a 54Mbps network.

Ok I'll start with the real micky mouse stuff

                          DNS - Domain Name Servers

DNS is essentially a look up service (like a addressbook - look up someones name and get their address), you type a URL into a browser, you trot off to the first set of DNS tables your ISP/internet connection takes you too to locate the site on the www.

On your PC (control panel, network connection, properties, TCP/IP, properties) if you leave preferred DNS blank you will probably get taken to your ISPs DNS tables. Thus the quality of your browsing experince depends on your ISP a) keeping these tables up to date b)offering instanteous response c) keeping loads of info. If any of these 3 fail, you will not get served the site quickly if at all or you may get bounced to another DNS server to find the location you want- thus slowing you down.

On your PC you can hardcode preferred DNS servers to ensure you go to a service you perceive to be better than the default you are offered by your ISP.

When a website changes hosting, its entry in DNS tables needs to be updated, this is when we talk about propagation - ie the time taken for all the DNS servers around the world to take in the new info and serve it to new requests.

DNS can get cached inside a PC, this is when you might reset your router to clear it or run IPCONFIG FLUSHDNS, to get rid of old cached info. This is useful when you know a website has changed hosting and you want to be sure to see it in its new home.

This can make a huge difference on the same connection - I replaced the modem with a router at home and got almost double the previous connection speeds on the same dial up service.

That was the part i didn't get, why our ISPs have DNS tables, why don't we go to a central master register like we do with Nominet for example.

So is there some preferred DNS servers we can use instead of default ones which are kept more up to date. Even if they are, that doesn't shed much light on why we are having DNS problems with this forum, it won't have changed for ages, so what's the issue here. It seems to fall over if it gets too much work to do (i have this problem too), as though it gets flooded with requests and has a strop and says 'sod y'all i'm doing none of it'.

Thank you anyway Croccy much appreciated, i'm glad you spotted my deliberate mistake in calling it Dedicated and not Domain .

Have a look on http://www.chetnet.co.uk there's a great resouce of information on there - some of the guys work for NTL/Virgin too. You 'll definitely find some alternative DNS server IPs to try out on there.

I have some great help from that forum in the past.
