For the last couple of days, mine is now letting some threads open and not others, if one hangs, select another and that one works instantly. I had a look in the forum options to see if there had been a 'numpty' or 'LP' filter applied, thus stopping the opening of such threads, alas there has not.

This is the kind of problem, where i would love someone to explain 'why' to me.

I've given up trying to work out why. I think my problem must be compounded by something "local" but I don't know what.
the most annoying thing is that it's only this forum that is usually affected. No fair!

          BT Business Broadband

We recently moved from a microwave link to broadband over the copper telephone line - as we are out in the sticks we didn't have the option of cable etc. Also, as other providers in our area are only reselling BTs system, we decided to go straight to BT. We are a long way from the exchange so we didn't expect more than about 1mb out of the 8mb service - we have been amazed to see that we are consistently getting more than 5mb. Usage is unrestricted, and we went with the Business version for a few pounds more per month to get very good, UK based, support. The system virtually installed itself. I never thought I would say this - I can recommend BT

lol Mark...we're with BT for exactly the same reasons.
Except I'm lucky to get .5mb speed!
oh well, at least I have a decent connection at the office

I'm starting to think my connection problem at home could be a power problem. There are just a few other things that are making me think so and I'm going to take the power pack, that I usually use in the office, home tonight (I have one here and one at home to save transporting in to and fro) and test out my theory!

We've found a lot of difference between the Business package and the Residential - a friend nearby has the Residential package, and rarely gets over 1mb

I'm fairly sure it is a business package we're signed up for (seeing as we had 2 businesses in there til recently) but I might check.

Depends how much extra it's going to cost me too, mind you. If it fixes my timing-out problem, how much is it worth to get into the forums? LOL

As a very rough guide from memory (for the unlimited packages) the Residential is about £25 per month including VAT, the Business is about £29 excluding VAT. Again, from memory, the new Business packages use "ADSLmax" technology, whereas older (residential) packages might be on plain old "ADSL" (as are most resellers), which might explain the difference in performance between BT subscribers.

hmmm...so that means it could potentially cost £10 a month more for a possible better performance...

                    *ponders a while*

                    I'll look into it
                    Cheers, Mark

I think the important bit is to find out whether you currently have a "ADSLmax" service, and if not, whether you could get this service - I think this is the thing that is likely to make most difference to performance.
