I thought you was advocating something called firewire or alike, i presume this is the next step up speed wise from USB2, was that not you?

That is the stripped down version with just the USB 2 interface... Firewire can have marginal increase in speed (depending on the PC hardware) so may be worth considering if shifting huge chunks of data. (your new PC should be fine to handle the speed)

It only transfers overnight when i am asleep, so the speed is not an issue, just want a solid reliable second external. I've had a seagate one for quite sometime which has been great. I did contemplate using an online service. but couldnt see how realistically i could send a 21GB file, i don't like the idea of incrememtals, i like a weeks worth of full previous backups.

I have 3 of the Western Digitals and they so far have not let me down... I have 1 running as a AVI storage streaming 4 IP Cameras on a motion sensor so takes a huge amount of thrashing during daylight hours.

Cheers matey - appreciated the banter - kept me sane

Just the ACD to create and then back it up to the external and thats me for the night.

We use the Mozy online backup with incremental backup (with full disk mirroring offline as well) and something went wrong with our online backup the other day and they had to reset something, this meant a new full backup which took ... 2 weeks to complete, crazy.

                                Regards,
