Google Analytics Loss of e-commerce data

Hi Darren

Could you let me know where in the help it tells you to put in your full URL. According to the help, you need to do the following:

You next need to set up a 'Receipt' goal in Google Analytics which will show you how many people shopping at your site actually completed their order.

1. Back on the main Google Analytics screen, click 'Edit' next to your profile name you want to use for the Actinic site.

2. Select one of your four goal slots under 'Conversion Goals and Funnel' and click 'Edit'.

3. Under 'Match Type' select 'Head Match'.

4. In the 'Goal URL' field, enter '/receipt.html'.

5. In the 'Goal name' field, enter 'Receipt'

6. Make sure 'Active Goal' is 'On' and 'Goal value Change the primary domain' is '0'.

I just want to make sure the page is up to date.

Tickle - could you go to 'Web Page Outer Layout > Receipt Page Layout' in the library and restore the layout back to factory settings. This seems to help people get the ecommerce data up and running with Google Analytics.

Chris under the actinic help, in v9 the last part of the help for google analytics, shows the step set up, the help shows the full url as in http://www.mydomain.co.uk/cgi-bin/ca000001.pl

this should only be the /cgi-bin/ca000001.pl

I must admit, I recycled this part from the Google guides that were on the forum, and as it worked fine, I left it in. But I agree that this could be better. I'll get the fix made.

I doubt it makes much difference, but i guess it could for some people that have odd setups, i have a site set up with the full url and it is working, i also have a site without and that works.

Yep, I've been struggling with this. I'm getting hits data but not Ecommerse info.

Did anyone find a solution for this?

It's all very strange as other customers are up and running with Google Analytics ecommerce tracking fine. My guess is that the upgrade scripts aren't adding in the ecommerce tracking code into the layouts correctly.

I'll look into it - but in the meantime you can also try restoring the following layouts back to factory settings if GA Ecommerce tracking isn't working after upgrading from v8 to v9...

Shopping Cart Product Details > Cart Product Details
Shopping Cart Grid > Checkout Shopping Cart Grid
Shopping Cart Grid > View Cart Page Shopping Cart Grid
Shopping Cart Table Row > Product Line Row
Web Page Outer Layout > Receipt Page Layout

I've finally got it working again after following Chris's guide above together with some extra code from Google. Chris is right, there is definitely some google code that hasn't transferred into these layouts during the V9 upgrade.

I also had the problem of removing all the old Google adwords code I had installed myself. I'd suggest removing all that first if you've got it there as it seems to clash with Actinic's google code.

My layouts above were slightly customised so I didn't go back to factory defaults in full. Instead I did the following (if memory serves correctly):

1. Did a backup
2. printed off the current code for these layouts
3. restored the first layout layout and looked for the differences relating to Adwords and copied the code.
4. clicked on undo to go back to my customised code
5. Pasted the adwords code from the factory default
6. start step 3 again for the next layout until they're all done

It was a while ago I did this first step but as I recall not all the layouts seemed to have google code on the factory reset version - just incase it's the same for you.


Having done all that the Analytics data started coming through in gull (hits, sales, etc).

However, when I looked at the Adwords stats all I was getting was clicks for the campaign and Ad Groups but no conversion data. If this is the problem you're having then the solution is probably the same as mine, shown below.

It seems that the Actinic code is purely for Analytics and not for Adword Campaign and Ad Groups conversion data.


1. Go onto Adwords Campaign Management Screen and then click on Conversion Tracking in the green area at the top of the screen.
2. If you have an action setup then click on it, otherwise create a new action (it's pretty simple) for purchase/sale then Save and Get the code
3. You've eother got the code from 2 above or click on view/verify the code to get it.
4. copy the code (you can't see all the code in the window provided but it still copies)

The code copied will be as follows (with the nnnnnnn's replaced with your number).

This needs to be copied into the receipt page. I copied it into the innerlayout code just before the </form> line with some <div> etc to centre it, etc.

Upload your site and you're done.


As soon as this code was uploaded I did a test payment on the site. you've got to do it using one of your adword ads from google for it to register against an Ad of course. Within about 1/2 hour I found that Adwords had tracked the conversion.

So it just looks to me like Actinic have missed this bit of code out.

No - Conversion tracking is completely different to Analytics and they use different code.

i did suggest fitting the conversion tracking code as standard during alpha testing but it was not done - perhaps chris can add it during an upgrade.

You're right, I think it should have been added for completeness. As an average Joe I assumed that Google Analytics in Actinic V9 mean't both the Analytics and Adwords.

I know they're different and require seperate setup but having become used to logging in to my google account with both Adwords and Analytics as tabs I got used to thinking of them as a the same thing.

A vote from me to add this into the code as an option if Adwords is used.

Will the above still work if the orders are dowloaded on a different comp? I've tried the above but still can't get it to work........very frustrating!!

downloading orders onto another of will not make any difference. The usual problem is that visitors are not being refered to your reciept page after payment. If they don't visit that page then no data is sent to g.

Check each payment type to make sure it is being shown after payment t. The only way to make sure is to do a live purchase IMO

Just placed a test order and everything seemed to go okay.....got through to the reciept page no problem. I'll check to see if G has logged it tomorrow.....though I don't hold out much hope

then its the codethat is wrong. Login to adwords and get the conversion tracking code from there and after removing the other code you have put in place the nw code just above the closing body tag.

So does GA only work with Adwords? or will it track all sales through Actinic?

the two things are completely separate things. Google analyticsa will track all data including sales while adwords conversion tracking will only track adwords conversion data eg conversion rates per keywords.

I think your getting a bit confused about it all. Its beat if you go to the adwords and analytics getting started guides and spend a bit of time Reading them. Then follow the integration guides where the correct code will be generated for your site and you can test it.

I've had Google Analytics up and running for a month or two now.....tracking visitors, page views....etc But there's an Ecommerce option in Google Analytics and I thought it was this that would track sales via the site as described in Marketing/Google Analytics in Actinic?

I'll give them both a read Mal, see if I can penetrate this thick skull of mine
