i dont know what this is asxxxxxxx.pmc this file is not something i ever recall seeing, but seems to have been the problem.

With AP you can customise the pages maybe not to be exactly the same as your site

as this is on a live site, ive patched it over with a direct link to cgi-bin/osxxxxxx.pl?action=start and it *seems* to be ok, orders are coming through now, whereas with the full hang - orders dropped out to almost none.

Hi can you help me please by explaining "cgi-bin/osxxxxxx.pl?action=start" by making a direct link (think you have solved this problem but im not sure how to edit what ive got at the moment any help appreciated.)

by-passing the "cart buttons" seems to speed things up a lot, so now im just confused.

gosh, 3 years sure does seem a long time ago. i think what i did there is replace my cart links with a hardcoded address "cgi-bin/osxxxxxx.pl?action=start" instead of the actinic created one. ive not had severe hanging since, but every now and then, it doesnt get a bit slow, so i delete all the sessions locked files and whether it does help or not, i feel a bit better for having done it usually.
