Network Settings with 1and1.co.uk

Hi, I'm having trouble uploading to 1and1 for the first time. I've looked at a couple of old threads on here but am still confused!

I keep getting the following error: "Unable to move to the cgi-bin directory "shop/cgi-bin/" on the FTP server. The specified directory does not exist or you do not have access to the directory"

Which is weird because I created the CGI BIN and checked the permissions are 755 ok.

Do the correct settings in the forum have the 'shop' folder included as you do?

Hi Lee - well the one I was referencing said to set it as:

PATHTOCGIBIN /domain/cgi-bin/

but I wasn't sure what was meant by that really. 1and1 are a bit weird (and unlike NetBenefit who we're currently on) in that you have to create a generic destination directory which is where your index.html file goes etc for a conventional site.

So my destination directory is "shop".

Does that make sense?

assuming you are replacing acatalog with shop

Hi Jo, no, with 1and1 "shop" is my destination directory which is kinda first level. Within "shop" I have created my acatalog and cgi-bin directories.

Personally i wouldn't go for a double folder set up, either use domain/acatalog, domain/cgi-bin or domain/shop, domain/cgi-bin

use network settings and predefine the catalog folder and cgi and let the wizard sort out the rest

Thanks Jo, but I don't think I can.

It's the funny way they do it at 1and1. If you have more than one domain on the same web space you have to have this sub-folder system.

Basically, I FTP to the generic space, then to access each domain name area I go to my subfolder or "destination" as they call it which for me is 'shop'.

Yet, when my customers access a page within the catalog, they will go here:

http://www.domain.co.uk/acatalog/index.html

This is what I can't get my head round!!

I'd setup things as they normally would be, get that working and passing, then do your sub folder structure. If you are using V9, i'd be inclined to rename the acatalog folder to be shop and stick to the one level of folder. I take it you are replacing domain.co.uk with your actual domain name?

LOl, I know you had to ask .... yes, I'm replacing with my actual domain name!

Ok, so I've made the cgi-bin and acatalog folder first level, so ignored my "shop" destination for now.

I now get this error:

"Actinic Ecommerce is not able to run the CGI scripts on the server. It appears as if the scripts are not installed. The most likely cause is that you have an incorrect CGI-BIN URL. If you've never uploaded the site, then you should do it before a download of orders. If you've uploaded the site ever, then Run Web | Configure Web Site Details... to review your web site configuration."

Now, I've checked the cgi-bin folder and the pm and pl files are in there!

I have several domains on the 1and1 server, each in its own folder but actinic doesnt need to know this, when you setup the sites on 1and1 you assign the domains to specific folders which are then the root for that domain. there are three independent actinic sites all working on the same server, only one is live the others are test sites.

Multiple domains are very easy to set up with 1and1. I have numerous domains on each account.

Simply create a directory in your webspace for each domain. Then in the 1and1 control panel point each domain to the subdirectory you created for it. Each domain will see that subdirectory as it's root. Within each directory then create cgi-bin and acatalog folders, set the permissions and your finished.

1and1 offer multiple domains on one site, within the site config you assign a folder as the root for the domain so the first level folder for a multiple domain site will contain several folders, each one assigned to a specific domain (you can also have multiple domains on a single folder if you want but that definitely is not for Actinic). I use 1and1 to host my design site and for numerous test sites to allow me to test sites for my clients. My own site is not a selling site but I have a couple of test sites which work ok, one on V8 and one on V9.

Are you using a ftp login that gives you full access to your sites hosting area. By this mean if you logged on using an ftp client you would have to open a folder called something like www or public_html to access your server http area. This master login gives you access server logs and other stuff.

i always create a second account that allows ftp only to the web root area on the servers. I am not familiar with 1and1 setup but if this is the case you would then be able to use the settings malcolm has posted.

I really dont understand why you need to add shop to the path. if you want your site hosted in a folder called shop change the acatalog to shop under the network settings.
