unfortunately lee not all the questions i ask get answered, which makes it more guess work as to what the problem is.

              Hi
Darren, the subdomains were all created via cpanel the correct way, as far as I am aware.
Mike, there is a cgi-bin sitting there in the domain.
lee - there are no actinic designers here at work

I would rather be at home playing Left 4 Dead 2 and shooting Zombies right now

Perhaps this needs to be confirmed?

OK. Trying to keep patient here.

As far as I can tell, as this thread has a habit of rambling, we are now working in the root and the cgi-bin does work.

Anne Marie, as I asked previously, will you run a network test please and copy back the error message.

                    Hi Mike,
On the way out tonight, I was told that Memset were going to get in touch at 8am regarding the path to perl, so I will be looking into that first thing tomorrow.
I have some design issues, i'm off to annoy you with in a minute

Very interesting (and amazing) thread, as I have been battling most of the day with a similar problem, which was giving the same responses. The solution in the end was to ignore the wizard, and look at my network settings for another site on the same server. In my case, clicking on the Server Tree in the wizard produced:

                      PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG rootfolder/acatalog/

                      when I changed it to

                      PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG ../acatalog/

it all worked. Conclusion: the wizard doesn't always know best and I know how frustrated Anne Marie feels - you guys have had the patience of saints today (I didn't even have time to visit the forum).
