it still depends on your isp and how fast they propagate. There's emails to set up, stats.. all the files to find, script changes to perhaps special contact us/newsletters etc to consider. time to upload you site etc..

Still no problem -Ive done it several times. NOT cheap though
Most hosting companies i know, run hourly DNS propogation changes, so it is very very rare to wait 2 or 3 days, unless you are with a terrible company of course.
In the last 40 days, i have changed 4 sites and all 4 were hosted with different companies. The longest any of them took to propogate was 3 hours, 2 of them were done within the hour. All 4 sites were live on their new hosting plan within 4 hours.
I thought that it took at least 24-36 hours for the site to re-registered with the new server id, so only realy usefull if the ISP went bust orunable to contact by any means. so really a last but helpfull resorce
If your hosting company goes belly up or they are totally useless and won't get anything done in a decent time frame, you can go above them and contact Nominet directly to make the changes. All you need to do is prove who you are and that the domain is yours. Ultimately the company with whom you are dealing are only a go-between, between yourself and Nominet. Sometimes as with many things in life, it can be quicker to just cut the middle man out and go direct to the source.
I did this just after Christmas with a domain and can confirm that it is true and works.
I can vouch for the fact the DNS propagation goes through really quickly, and that it depends on your ISP as to the speed at which it is viewed - we moved to a dedicated server in October and could see the site at its new location within half an hour viewing it at work, but our home ISP took about 4 hours to propagate.
If you have cp access to your domain reg you can change A records only (rather than chage tag etc), this is quick.
the problems are bad communications when the shit hits the fan
the problem we regularly face is knowing when to post info. Often you can not say anything except - we know there is a problem as we are investigation.
Sometimes there is nothing to say as investigations are ongoing. Some people demand updates every 10 mins. In the past we fell into the trap of trying to feed these demands but often the info fed early in investigation turns out to be misleading ie a symptom not the cause, and then we get accused of feeding incorrect info.
This even happened last night when we fed info re the firewall reset, this was misinterpteted by some clients who thought the issue was resolved - even though the update said - we hope to fully resolve soon.
Our News Desk will provide feedback later on today or tomorrow when we have had time to fully evaluate.
Fot the benefit of others who look at this thread in the future looking for a reliable host - the number of sites affected by this issue (which was caused by someone uploading an untested script) was about 5% of the actinic sites we host.
We acknowledge that if one site is down it is one site too many and is no consolation to the site owner, but we would like to put some perspective on this and point out that 95% of sites hosted with us were not affected.
We had to reset the network firewall on Sunday evening in order to force traffic re-routing, thus other sites were temporarily disrupted.
I think it is within the hour but all they say on the website is:
Emergency Hosting Provision
Should your existing service provider go out of commission or your site experience poor service levels you will be entitled to 60 days free Actinic hosting. This ensures that your online store remains open whilst you find a new service provider.
