Malcolm I didn't say that! I asked you to clarify what you were saying. I have a team of people who can do the technical side and if it can be done then it would be. A site still has to be set up again. I was pointing out that it is not a matter of just switching and then doing nothing.

Just wondering how you think you can do that
Is what you asked - implying that I was talking B*****Ks

        Jenny

I think what malcolm means is

Your host go's down so, you get another server set up, i can add a site to my pinbrook account in 2 minutes flat, change the records of you website to point to the new name servers. This is when it pays to remember or keep a written record of you domain register login and passwords.

Upload actinic to the new site, if the domain has not propigated already us the IP address then change this later, this takes as long as you store takes to upload.

then upload you other files bits of site that you might have out side of actinic.

At least you have a shop still running with limited down time. You may have issues with people finding you old site if it comes back on line while the DNS servers are updated, but i normally find that within 2 hours my domains are visable on the pinbrook servers.

hop this help explain a bit more

I think that you may have misunderstood, Jenny is a well established Actinic host and has been for many years, I think she was just pointing out that to say that you can transfer a site to a new host in 5 minutes is a little naive and could be very misleading for new users.

It's good to advertise the emergency hosting mind you, I think it is a really good feature of cover and not that well known.

serves me right for not looking at the sites in her signature

            Sorry Jenny

I was unaware of the emergency hosting but i am sure i will not need it, unless my host decides to retire early

            Cheers

So I am naive now - unbelievable. I get so hacked off by hosting companies making out that hosting is such a complex subject and changing vast sums for the privelage of hosting with them. Most of them are resellers who are only in it for the profit.

The fact is that you can move host very quickly and get a good package for as little as £19 pa which is UK based.

I too could set up my own hosting company within the hour and make some easy cash. I could also transfer Actinic sites to it a the rate of several an hour. I dont do this because I feel I would be ripping people off and I pride myself on giving honest advice over making a few extra pounds profit.

Now I hope that that upsets people because I dont like being called a liar or naive - I too know a little bit about Actinic and hosting having set up many sites.

Feel free to have your say - I wont be replying on this thread anymore.

Don't worry about it Malcolm, you've been around this forum long enough to know that you can only criticize large companies and must never voice anything about Actinic or certain service providers.
It's ok to slag off the likes of 1and1 though, by the way the 1and1 email servers are crap.

Re emergency hosting - there is a degree of truth in what most people are saying, its just that each bit is not the full story....

To the best of my knowledge (but prefixing my comments with this, anyone is free to say - well what does she know.... )

you can change nameservers in the click of a button, the registrar of the domain will then reflect this in their DNS tables pretty well immediately.

if you want to upload your site to the new name servers you can - if you (1)know the the server name, or (2) you have an instant alias or (3) if the site has a dedicated IP.

Without knowing how actinic emergency hosting works I would assume either 1 and/or 2 apply.

Thus your site is now live on the www - but it is not instantly live at its domain name. It can be seen if you know the IP (not many potential visitors will know this), or can be seen using the instant alias (again no-one is going to know this)

Thus you then have to wait for the DNS tables held by ISPs around the world are updated - this time scale is ISP dependant for the domain to be visible at the domain name. This is how most visitors will find your site, and this is how SE's will have your site indexed.

This is spot on the money Jo to how sites get up and running. In addition, with some hosting companies, there is also the management facility to gain a website up and running to it own url within 15 minutes.

We have tested this with a couple of domains recently and the chain was thus...

                        1 Domain ordered 4.15pm
2 Email confirmation received 10 minutes later
3 entered www.tld_here.com &.co.uk into address bar of standalone pc at 4.30pm
                        4 uploaded our holding page.
5 Ready for the world to see at www.tld.com AT 4.32PM

Now I am assuming that Actinic use a process that is similar to the one that we have at our disposal. Now I know 17 minutes is not instant BUT it is pretty fast and I do feel that the days of 24/48 props are over.

So this confirms my original statement which kicked off this whole argument - infuture those members who are keen to put down others abilities should look at thier own skills before posting. Oh and I assume that Im not classed as a respected member of the forum so Ill stick to being naive.

I purchased a new domain with hosting last week and had full access to the site and for the world to see in less than 60 mins .. it may have been less but did not check.
