scurries off to check nothing has broken any actinic rules and risks the thread being deleted

I was giddly happy the thing finally uploaded in one piece (pleasure comes at a high price)... the ACD completed and copied to the external as a back up. I was one happy and relieved bunny last night

No!!! Don't go anywhere near this pile of poo.

            Got one last week.

It was, to quote WD's technical support people, DOA. Apparently this is "very common" !!!

It has gone back to the retailer.

Wish I'd read the reviews on Dabs first. Got mine elsewhere. Big mistake.

you get what you pay for, i was merely offering lee a network version of what had been mentioned, i know he uses a network and might find it more beneficial to have one with network capability.

but lets be honest, if its your lifes work and the data is of importance, then you should have a good NAS and not portable HD, they were not and never have been ideal carry around things.

Always remember these are spinning disks and moving heads, you drop it or shake it you are not going to do it much good. HD fail, fact of life thats why we back up?

yep i've gone throught too many ext HDs, however the one i bought as ext which is now inside my PC is still going fine.

I've now got NAS, and use it along with online backup and in an emergency a flash drive is good as it is solid state (not a whirry thingie)

Can't help noticing there were no hoots of derision when it was suggested going to bed while the upload was progressing.
This has never been an option for us, although a complete refresh doesn't take more than 20 mins, some error or another always crops up 2, 3, 5, or more times during that time - usually along the lines of server not communicating, unspecified failure etc, with the option to retry, which normally works.
It's always been like this, over 4 sites, on different servers, windows or linux, no matter what we put into the network settings.
I've always assumed this was just Actinic at it's buggy best.
                            Am I missing something?
                            Kind Regards

I get round most of them by using enhanced ftp and changing retries to higher and the space in between tries to be higher. I think the Mole End DuberryFirkin can be told to ignore errors if you buy that.

I would never slope off leaving an upload running ... as you say you can never be 100% sure it will upload and if it hangs mid upload you could corrupt the whole cart making it unusable whilst away counting the sheep ... even when test uploading to a private area I have been known to stay up until gone 4.00am to ensure it uploads knowing I have to be up again in 3 hours... all part of the job
